Boots has announced the launch of a private bone scan service to help over-40s identify their risk of osteoporosis.
The service will be available to people aged 40 and over with no history of fragility fractures, with consultations costing £75 and taking around 25 minutes according to the multiple.
The service will run initially as a pilot across 10 Boots branches across the UK, Jersey and the Isle of Man.
Operated by Bindex, it involves an ultrasound scan of the shin bone carried out by a pharmacist or nurse, with patients receiving a printout of their bone density scan results immediately afterwards.
They will also be offered lifestyle advice, and those whose results suggest further testing is needed will be advised to speak to their GP.
Boots superintendent pharmacist Claire Nevinson said: “The launch of our new Bone Health Service is a vital step in helping adults, and in particular women, take a more proactive approach to their health, giving them a convenient and accessible way to understand their osteoporosis risk on the high street.”
